My Seagate Backup Plus drive stopped showing up on my computer, and I need to recover important files from it. I’m looking for safe DIY data recovery steps or tools before I risk making the external hard drive problem worse.
First thing: stop doing anything with the Seagate drive for now. Don’t format it, don’t initialize it, don’t copy anything onto it, and don’t run “repair” tools yet. If the drive suddenly looks empty, asks to be set up again, or shows up as unreadable, the files may still be there. The computer may just not be reading the partition or file system correctly.
Before trying software, do a quick physical check. Plug it in only long enough to see how it behaves. If it clicks, grinds, beeps, keeps spinning up and down, or sounds wrong in any obvious way, stop there. Scanning a failing drive can make things worse. In that case, check Seagate’s Rescue Data Recovery Services first, especially if this is a Backup Plus model. Some of them came with Rescue coverage for a limited period, so it’s worth checking the serial number before paying for a lab.
If the drive sounds normal but your computer can’t open it, shows the wrong file system, says it needs to be formatted, or lists it as RAW/unreadable, DIY recovery may still be worth trying. That kind of issue is often file system damage rather than the actual files being erased.
For software recovery, Disk Drill is one option to look at for Seagate external drives. It can scan for lost partitions, deleted files, RAW drives, unreadable volumes, and cases where the drive was unplugged without being safely ejected.
The safer way to approach it is:
- Install the recovery app on your computer’s internal drive, or on another separate drive. Do not install it on the Seagate drive you’re trying to recover.
- If the drive seems flaky, make a byte-to-byte backup first. Disk Drill can create a full disk image, then you can scan that image instead of repeatedly stressing the original drive.
- Try a different USB cable, adapter, or port if detection is inconsistent. With portable external drives, a bad cable can make the situation look worse than it is.
- Scan the Seagate drive, or better, the disk image if you made one.
- Preview the files before recovering them. If a photo, video, document, or archive previews correctly, that’s usually a good sign.
- Recover the files to another drive. Never save recovered files back onto the same Seagate drive during recovery.
If the drive doesn’t show up in your regular file browser, check whether the system still sees it at a lower level. On Windows, look in Disk Management. On macOS, check Disk Utility. On Linux, use the system’s disk tools. If it appears there with the correct capacity, recovery software may still be able to scan it even if the OS can’t mount it normally.
Once you get your files back, don’t just assume the drive is fine. Run a full diagnostic with Seagate SeaTools or another trusted drive-testing tool. If it fails, replace it. If it passes, you can reformat and reuse it, but I’d still keep another backup going forward.
Also, be patient with the scan. Large external drives can take a long time. If the drive powers on, sounds normal, and shows the correct capacity, there’s still a decent chance the data is recoverable.
Don’t open the Seagate enclosure unless you know exactly which Backup Plus model it is. Some of those portable drives have USB built onto the drive board, so shucking it may not give you a normal SATA drive to plug in anyway.
If it shows in Disk Management with the right size, clone/image it first and scan the clone with something like Disk Drill or ddrescue. If it shows as 0 bytes or drops in and out, stop treating it like a software problem.
Do not run CHKDSK, First Aid, “scan and fix,” or any partition repair wizard on that Seagate until the files are copied somewhere else. Those tools are meant to make a volume usable again, not preserve every recoverable file, and they can rewrite metadata that recovery software would have used.
Jeff’s point about the enclosure matters, but I’d put the USB cable/power side even earlier in the process. If it’s a 2.5’ portable Backup Plus, try a short known-good USB cable plugged directly into the computer, not a hub, dock, monitor port, or front-panel port. If it’s a desktop Backup Plus with its own power brick, try to confirm the adapter is the correct one. A weak cable or flaky power supply can make the drive appear dead, RAW, or randomly disconnecting when the disk itself is still readable.
If it shows the correct capacity even once, treat that as your window to image it, not your chance to browse around and copy folders by hand. Use whatever you’re comfortable with, whether that’s ddrescue on Linux or a GUI tool like Disk Drill that can work from an image. The important part is recovering to a completely different drive. If the drive keeps vanishing during the image, gets very slow, or starts making new noises, I’d stop there rather than “trying one more scan,” because that is usually where DIY stops being cheap and starts reducing what a lab can recover.
The hidden downside with some Backup Plus drives is that the enclosure or Seagate software may be part of how the data is accessed, especially if you ever set a password or used Seagate Toolkit/Secure features. In that case, pulling the bare drive out or scanning it as a random disk can give you nonsense results, because the recovery program may only be seeing encrypted data. So before “shucking” it, think back to whether you had any password prompt, bundled backup app, or security setting enabled.
I agree with the others on imaging first, but I’d be a little less eager to start a deep scan on the original disk unless the files are worth only a casual attempt. A deep scan can take hours, and if the drive is marginal, that is hours of stress. If the drive appears with the correct size, make an image to another drive first. Then scan the image with Disk Drill, R-Studio, DMDE, PhotoRec, or whatever tool you’re comfortable with. Disk Drill is easier for non-technical users, but the important part is not the brand of scanner. The important part is scanning a copy instead of grinding away on the only copy.
Another small thing people forget: recovered files need somewhere to go. If this is a 2 TB Seagate with 1.5 TB of data, you need another drive with enough free space before you start. Don’t recover “just a few folders” back onto the Seagate because it mounted for a minute. That is how you overwrite the exact stuff you were trying to save. If the drive won’t stay connected long enough to image, shows 0 bytes, or makes repeated clicking/beeping sounds, I’d stop DIY there and get a quote from a lab rather than turning a recoverable case into a worse one.
