I accidentally formatted my USB thumb drive and lost important files I still need for work. I’m looking for the easiest and safest way to recover data from a formatted flash drive before anything gets overwritten.
I did this once with a USB full of photos and PDFs, and the first thing I learned was simple. A format is bad, but it does not always wipe everything out. What matters most is which format was used and whether anything was written to the drive after.

If the flash drive keeps disconnecting, throws read errors, or crawls at a painfully slow speed, I would not keep scanning the original device over and over. I agree with @mikeappsreviewer on the big part, don’t write anything to the USB. I differ a bit on one point though. People spend too long guessing quick format vs full format. If the files matter for work, I’d skip the guessing and do one safe pass with recovery software right away.
My easy route:
- Plug the USB into a stable PC, no hubs if possble.
- Check Disk Management first. If the drive shows the right size, that’s a good sign.
- If it mounts, run Disk Drill and scan the whole device, not a folder.
- If it acts flaky, make a byte-for-byte image first, then scan the image.
- Recover files to your PC or another external drive, never back to the thumb drive.

If Disk Drill finds nothing and the files are important, stop there. Repeated scans are usless on a dying stick. At that point, pro recovery is the safer next step.
Biggest thing: do not “restore” the thumb drive first. A lot of people click repair/format again and basically make it worse.
I mostly agree with @mikeappsreviewer and @shizuka, but I’d push one extra step before scanning: if the files are really job-critical, clone or image the USB first if your system can still read it. Not everyone bothers, but flash drives can go weird fast, and one bad reconnect later you’re stuck. If the drive is stable, then sure, scan it directly.
Also, small disagreement with the “check format type too much” angle. It matters, but for most normal users the practical question is simpler: was anything copied onto it after formatting? If yes, recovery odds drop. If no, you still have a decent shot.

Small pushback on the “just scan it” advice from @shizuka, @caminantenocturno, and @mikeappsreviewer: if this is work-critical and the USB is even slightly flaky, I’d spend 5 extra minutes checking SMART-like behavior isn’t really possible on most thumb drives, so your best clue is simple stability. If it disconnects once, image first or stop.
My take: the easiest safe path is recover the files, not the drive. Don’t try Windows repair, don’t reformat again, don’t use “restore previous version” on the USB itself.
