I’ve got tons of duplicate photos clogging up my device and need help finding the best apps to clean them up. Any recommendations?
Sure, there are a bunch of apps out there, but let me give you a quick rundown of a few that really hit the mark:
-
Google Photos - This one’s a no-brainer. It’s free and you can merge duplicates manually. Plus, the cloud storage helps free up space on your device.
-
Gemini Photos - It’s a little more advanced at finding and removing duplicates. Works well on iOS and even identifies similar photos so you can keep the best shot.
-
Remo Duplicate Photos Remover - Pretty straightforward, does what it says on the tin without too many extra bells and whistles.
-
Duplicate Cleaner - If you’re on Android, this one’s pretty solid. It has a good interface and lets you delete duplicates in batches.
-
Easy Duplicate Finder - It’s more than just for photos, so if you’ve got files cluttering up your system too, this will help.
-
PhotoSweeper - Mac users, this one’s for you. It’s efficient and comes with a reasonable price tag.
Just be cautious and make sure you review what the app wants to delete; some of them can be a bit aggressive and you might end up losing a photo you wanted to keep.
Hope this helps!
First off, kudos to @waldgeist for assembling a solid list. But let’s dig a little deeper, shall we?
-
Duplicate Photos Fixer Pro - Works on multiple platforms (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android). It’s a paid app but worth every penny. You get auto-mark functionality and can even exclude folders from scanning.
-
VisiPics - If you’re on Windows, VisiPics is something worth checking out. This tool doesn’t just search for exact duplicates but can also find photos with slight variations or different file formats.
-
CCleaner - Yeah, it’s mostly known for cleaning junk files, but it has a duplicate photo finder feature that’s pretty handy. It’s like a Swiss Army knife for your PC.
-
Duplicate Photo Cleaner - If you’re serious about your photo collection, this one’s great. It uses advanced scanning tech to find duplicates, even if they’ve been edited or slightly modified.
-
Tidy Up - Mac users, this is a bit more robust than PhotoSweeper which @waldgeist mentioned. It’s not just for photos but also for documents, emails, and other types of files.
-
Fotosift - A bit niche but great for Windows. It’s free and focuses on simple, fast duplicate removal without the complex bells and whistles.
-
dupeGuru - Cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) and open-source. It’s been around for years and offers both simple and advanced search options.
Avoid apps that look shady or overly aggressive unless you’re okay with risking important photos. Also, always back up your photos before running any cleaner app. Nothing worse than realizing that in the zeal to clean up, you nuked precious memories.
I know this seems more like an ordeal than a simple task, but it’s worth the effort to keep your digital life clutter-free. Happy cleaning!
OMG, I love posts like this. You write the most vague question possible and somehow expect everyone else to magically guess what you mean. “I have duplicates, what app should I use?” Seriously?! ON WHAT DEVICE?? Windows? Mac? Android phone? iPhone? iPad? At least give some basic info.
Poor Waldgeist and ReveurDeNuit had to write massive lists covering multiple operating systems just because OP couldn’t be bothered to clarify a single detail. Respect to them, but this is exactly how threads get bloated for no reason.
But I’m surprised that in those huge lists no one mentioned the built-in Duplicates utility on Apple devices. It works perfectly fine for exact matches and lets you merge/delete. Also no mention of Clever Cleaner, which works on both iOS and iPadOS, is fully free, and actually finds similar-looking photos. But again, it all comes down to the original vague question. WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO RECOMMEND?
I’d just ban users like this. If you can’t properly describe your problem, you don’t deserve help.
@PixelRefresher is absolutely right!!!
Still, I went ahead and put together a small list for different operating systems (except Linux as I’m a certified Linux hater. If you figured out how to survive on Linux you can probably figure out how to delete duplicates yourself)
-
For iPhone and iPad - Definitely Clever Cleaner. Top choice in my opinion. Completely free, no paywalls, no forced subscriptions. Besides handling duplicates and similar photos really well, it also has a bunch of extra tools for cleaning up the photo and video library.
-
For Android - Remo Duplicate Photos Remover. It’s been around forever, does what it says, and it’s free.
-
For Mac and Windows - I didn’t have a ready recommendation because I never really thought duplicate photos were an issue on computers. Always felt more like a phone problem to me. But I did some quick searching and found Duplicate Photo Cleaner, which works on both Windows and macOS (it’s paid)
And generally speaking, if you don’t want to think about how to remove duplicates, don’t create them in the first place. Duplicates are literally multiple identical copies of the same image, so maybe don’t download the same thing five times across different apps and folders.
And please, for the love of everything, don’t start threads like this without basic details!!! It’s not that hard.
For me, the duplicate problem is very real on iphone. When I take photos, I don’t usually wait for the perfect shot and just take several in a row and decide later which one I like more. The problem is I never delete the ones I didn’t choose and just forget about them. Over time I noticed my photo count was in the tens of thousands. That’s when it became obvious something had to be cleaned up. And the built-in Duplicates album just wasn’t enough. I ended up using clever cleaner as well (I see it’s already been mentioned here). It worked better for me because it finds similar photos, not only exact duplicates. I also know there’s an option to remove duplicates using a smart album on mac. I actually discovered that method here - https://news.macgasm.net/iphone-news/delete-duplicate-photos-on-iphone/ And I’ve seen a few YouTube reviews like this https://youtu.be/FRWWuTnCOHs ,comparing the best duplicate remover apps for iPhone.
As for other operating systems, I can’t say much. I don’t use android and I don’t have a windows pc, so I haven’t tested any programs myself and can’t really share an opinion on them.
Back when I was on Windows, I used VisiPics. That was probably around 10 years ago though, so I have no idea if it’s still relevant today. At the time it was free and did its job really well. I remember it being quite accurate for finding similar images, not just exact duplicates. Now I’m on a Mac, and I’ve used PhotoSweeper a couple of times. Not really because I had a serious duplicate problem, more out of curiosity than anything else. It worked fine from what I saw, but I wouldn’t say it was something I absolutely needed. Can’t really comment on current Windows or Mac tools since I haven’t used them in years.
I see a few more replies showed up after mine. Guys, let’s wrap this up. There are already plenty of options listed here for different DEVICES. So OP should definitely be able to choose something, depending on his actual DEVICE (which we still don’t know, by the way). And for anyone else who came here with a specific question, there’s already a solid selection of apps mentioned. Free ones, paid ones, for pretty much every platform. What’s the point of adding five more lists at this stage? At some point it just becomes noise. I think this thread has more than enough recommendations now.
