How To Turn Off Ai Overview Google

Google started showing AI Overview in my search results, and it’s making it harder to find the regular links I actually want. I’ve tried changing a few search settings but nothing seems to remove it. I need help figuring out if there’s a way to turn off Google AI Overview or hide it so I can search normally again.

Google does not give you a clean off switch for AI Overview in normal Search. That’s the annoyng part.

What you can do:

  1. Use the Web filter.
After you search, click Web at the top. If you do not see it, hit More, then Web.
This strips out most extras and shows standard blue links.

  2. Make Web your default with a browser extension.
    Search for extensions like:
    Hide Google AI Overviews
    Google Search Web Default
Those force searches into the Web tab.

  3. Add terms to your search.
    People use:

  • -ai
  • ‘web’
  • site:example.com
Results vary. This is hit or miss.
  1. Stay signed out, or use another region.
Some users report fewer AI Overview boxes when signed out or in different locales. Not consistent, but worth a try.

  2. Use another search engine.
DuckDuckGo, Startpage, Kagi, even Bing for some searches. If Google keeps shoving it in, switching is the only real fix.

On mobile, same story. Tap Web after the search. There is no proper setting to disable it account-wide right now.

Short version, no full off button exists. Web tab is the closest thing. Extensions are the best long-term workaround if you use desktop a lot.

Not really an off switch, yeah. One thing I’d add to what @cazadordeestrellas said: try changing your search URL/settings directly.

A couple workarounds that sometimes help:

  • Use this Google URL after searching: &udm=14
People have been appending that to force a more basic web-results view. It’s kinda nerdy, but it works better than the whole -ai trick in my experiance.

  • Make a custom search engine in your browser
In Chrome/Edge/Firefox, you can add a custom engine that searches Google with the parameters you want. Then you search from the address bar and skip some of the clutter.

  • Use Google’s Verbatim option for some searches
Tools > All results > Verbatim. This does not remove AI Overview every time, but it can cut down on Google “helping” too much.

  • Try site: searches for stuff where you already know the source
    Example: site:reddit.com best budget monitor
Honestly, this is often faster than fighting Google’s layout.

I kinda disagree that signing out/region switching is worth much. Feels inconsistant and more annoying than useful. The browser custom search option is probly the least painful desktop fix right now.
