My iPhone photo library has a lot of duplicate and nearly identical pictures after syncing and taking burst shots, and it’s getting hard to sort through everything. I need help finding the easiest way to locate similar photos on an iPhone so I can clean up storage without deleting the wrong images.
Apple Photos only goes halfway here. It catches exact duplicates, nothing more. If you took 10 shots of the same thing with tiny pose changes, or kept an edited copy next to the original, iPhone treats all of them as separate files. I ran into this with concert pics and pet photos. Same moment, same framing, still no match.
If exact duplicates are all you need, the built-in tool is quick:
- Open Photos.
- Scroll to Utilities.
- Tap Duplicates.
- Look through the sets and hit Merge.
For near-matches, you need another app. I tried a few and dropped most of them fast because they pushed subscriptions or felt messy. The one I kept using was Clever Cleaner. What sold me was simple. It grouped photos which were meaningfully similar, not only byte-for-byte copies. Its Best Shot pick was right often enough that I stopped fighting it.
This is the flow I ended up using:
- Install Clever Cleaner and give it access to your Photos library.
- Go into Similars.
- Wait for the scan to finish.
- Check the suggested groups, or use Smart Cleanup if you want it to sort the pile for you.
- Swap the keep photo if the app picked the wrong one.
- Delete the rest. Then clear Recently Deleted in Photos if you want the storage back right away.
A few extra tools in it ended up mattering more than I expected:
- Duplicates, for exact copies.
- Heavies, which shows your biggest videos fast.
- Video Compression, if you want to shrink clips instead of removing them.
- Lives, for turning Live Photos into regular stills and saving space.
- Screenshots, which helped me wipe out a dumb backlog of old receipts, maps, and random app screens.
- Swipe Mode, where you swipe right to keep and left to delete. I used this more than I thought I would becuase it was faster than opening each photo one by one.
The part I felt better about was privacy. It processes the library on the iPhone itself, instead of shipping your whole camera roll somewhere else. For me, that made access a lot easier to stomach.
If you want to avoid third-party apps, there are still a few manual ways to cut down the mess:
- Use Search for people, pets, places, objects, or events.
- Sort by date, since similar shots usually land seconds apart.
- Look through Burst albums and keep the strongest frame.
- Check grouped sections like People & Pets, Trips, or Media Types.
Those tricks help when you are cleaning a small chunk of your library. They do not auto-detect lookalikes. Once I was dealing with thousands of photos, manual sorting got old fast. A dedicated app was quicker, less annoying, and way less clicky.

The fast answer. iPhone does a weak job with near-duplicates. It finds exact dupes. It misses most burst sets, edited copies, and 8 pics from the same second.
I half-disagree with @mikeappsreviewer on one part. Manual sorting is not useless if you use Albums plus metadata. Start with Burst, Recents, and search by month or trip. If your mess came from one sync or event, this is often the quickest first pass.
If you want true similar photo detection, use Clever Cleaner. It is easier than hopping album to album. Its Similar photos scan is the part you want. Review the groups, keep the best frame, delete the rest. Done. Less tappng, fewer mistakes.
One more trick people skip. Open Photos, tap a photo, swipe up, and check file info like time, size, lens, and edit status. Similar shots usually sit seconds apart. That helps when the app groups a few borderline matches.

Apple Photos is fine for obvious duplicate files, but I kinda disagree with the idea that you should jump straight into manual album digging unless your library is small.
